YouCloset ("we", "us", "the app") is a digital wardrobe app that lets you photograph your clothing, build outfit combinations, and receive AI-assisted styling. This Privacy Policy explains exactly what data we collect, how we collect it, how we use it, and which third parties process it on our behalf. We have written it to be readable; if anything is unclear, please email us.
1. Summary (the short version)
We do not sell your data.
We do not use your data for advertising.
Your wardrobe (clothing photos, outfits, notes) is stored on your device. It is not uploaded to our servers.
AI features (chat, outfit suggestions, clothing identification, voice transcription, background removal) require sending specific data to OpenAI and Replicate. These features are off by default and only run after you grant explicit in-app consent.
You can revoke AI consent at any time in Settings → Manage AI Data. Disabling it stops all AI calls immediately.
2. Data We Collect and How
Wardrobe content
What: Photos of your clothing, item titles, categories, colors, notes, outfit ("fit") compositions, collections.
How collected: Created by you in the app (camera, photo library, manual entry).
Where it lives: On your device only (local SQLite database + app documents directory).
Chat messages
What: Text you type into the AI Style Assistant; optional voice recordings you choose to dictate.
How collected: Created by you when you use the chat feature.
Where it lives: Sent to OpenAI for processing; not stored on our servers.
Voice audio
What: Audio recorded when you tap the microphone in chat.
How collected: Recorded on-device with your permission.
Where it lives: Sent to OpenAI Whisper for transcription; not stored on our servers.
Clothing photos for AI processing
What: The single clothing photo you submit when adding a piece.
How collected: Captured/selected by you.
Where it lives: Sent to Replicate (background removal) and OpenAI (clothing identification); not retained by us.
Subscription status
What: Premium entitlement, purchase receipts.
How collected: Provided by Apple / RevenueCat when you subscribe.
Where it lives: RevenueCat servers; we receive only the entitlement state.
Language preference
What: Locale setting.
How collected: Read from device settings.
Where it lives: Sent with AI requests so replies are in your language.
Diagnostic data
What: Crash logs, anonymous performance metrics.
How collected: Apple's standard crash reporting (only if you opted in at the OS level).
Where it lives: Apple.
We do not collect: your name, email, phone number, address, contacts, location, browsing history, or device identifiers for tracking.
3. How We Use Your Data
We use the data above only to:
Operate the core wardrobe features on your device (storing pieces, building fits, browsing collections).
Provide AI features you have explicitly enabled (chat replies, outfit generation, clothing identification, voice transcription, background removal).
Verify your subscription entitlement.
Deliver the app in your selected language.
We do not use your data to train AI models, build advertising profiles, or share with data brokers.
4. Third-Party AI Service Providers
YouCloset relies on the following third-party services to deliver AI features. Data is sent to them only after you grant in-app consent through Onboarding → "AI-Powered Features" → Review & Approve → I Agree & Continue, or re-enable AI under Settings → Manage AI Data.
4.1 OpenAI, L.L.C. (United States)
Purpose: Generates chat replies, outfit suggestions, identifies clothing items from a photo, transcribes voice (Whisper), and produces text-to-speech audio.
Data sent:
Chat messages you type
Photos of clothing you add (only when adding a new piece)
Item descriptions and style preferences (when generating an AI outfit)
Voice audio (only when you use voice input)
Language preference
Retention by OpenAI: Per OpenAI's API data usage policy, data submitted via the API is not used to train or improve OpenAI models. OpenAI may retain API request data for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring before deletion.
Provider's privacy policy: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy
4.2 Replicate, Inc. (United States)
Purpose: Removes the background from a clothing photo so the item is isolated for your wardrobe.
Data sent: A single clothing photo per request.
Retention by Replicate: Per Replicate's data policy, prediction inputs and outputs are deleted after processing.
Provider's privacy policy: https://replicate.com/privacy
4.3 RevenueCat, Inc. (United States)
Purpose: Manages subscription entitlement verification.
Data sent: App Store transaction receipts and an anonymous app-user ID.
Provider's privacy policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy
4.4 Apple Inc.
Purpose: App distribution, in-app purchase processing, and crash reporting.
Provider's privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
We do not share your data with any third parties other than those listed above.
Note on previous versions: Earlier versions of YouCloset used Google (Gemini) for AI styling features. As of this policy update, Gemini is no longer used and no data is sent to Google's AI services.
5. Your Consent and Control Over AI Features
Apple's App Review Guidelines (5.1.1 and 5.1.2) require explicit consent before sharing personal data with third-party AI services. We comply as follows:
AI features are disabled by default. No clothing photo, message, or audio leaves your device until you grant consent.
First consent prompt: During onboarding, page 4 ("AI-Powered Features") presents a disclosure sheet listing every category of data sent, every third-party provider that receives it, and the retention policy. You must tap "I Agree & Continue" to enable AI features. Tapping "Not Now" or "Skip for now" keeps AI disabled.
Re-prompt at the point of use: If AI is disabled and you tap any AI-using feature (chat, AI outfit, photo identification), the same disclosure sheet is shown again before any network call is made.
Revocation at any time: Open Settings → Manage AI Data → Disable AI Features. From that moment, no further data is sent to OpenAI or Replicate. Locally stored wardrobe data is unaffected.
6. Data Storage and Security
Wardrobe content (photos, items, fits, collections) is stored locally on your device.
We do not operate user accounts, cloud sync, or remote backups of your wardrobe.
Data sent to AI providers travels over HTTPS (TLS 1.2+).
We do not log or persist the content of your chat messages, photos, or audio on our servers.
We value your trust in providing your personal information and use commercially acceptable means to protect it. However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
7. Data Retention
On-device data: Retained until you delete a piece/fit/collection in the app, or uninstall the app. Uninstalling removes all local wardrobe data.
AI provider data: Subject to each provider's retention policy (see Section 4). We do not retain any copies on our infrastructure.
Subscription data: Retained by Apple and RevenueCat for the duration of your subscription and for accounting purposes thereafter.
8. Log Data
In case of an app error, limited diagnostic data may be collected through Apple's standard crash reporting tools. This may include device model, operating system version, app configuration at the time of the error, and the time and date of the event. This data is handled by Apple under its own privacy policy and is only made available to us in aggregated, anonymous form, and only if you opted in to share diagnostics at the OS level.
9. Cookies
YouCloset is a native iOS application and does not use cookies. Some third-party services we rely on (such as their web-based dashboards) may use cookies on their own websites, but the app itself does not.
10. Links to Other Sites
This Service may contain links to external websites (for example, to the privacy policies of our service providers). These external sites are not operated by us. We strongly advise you to review the privacy policy of any website you visit through these links. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.
11. Children's Privacy
YouCloset is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided data through the app, please contact us at mdemir85@icloud.com and we will work with you to address it, including deleting any such information.
12. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction (including the EU/UK GDPR and the California CCPA), you may have rights to:
Access the data we hold about you
Request deletion of that data
Object to or restrict processing
Withdraw consent for AI processing (built into the app — see Section 5)
Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority
Because we do not operate user accounts, the practical exercise of these rights is mostly under your direct control: deleting items in the app, disabling AI in Settings, or uninstalling the app removes the corresponding data. For any additional request, email mdemir85@icloud.com and we will respond within 30 days.
13. International Data Transfers
OpenAI, Replicate, and RevenueCat are based in the United States. If you use AI features from outside the United States, the relevant data is transferred to and processed in the U.S. under each provider's contractual safeguards (Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable).
14. Changes to This Policy
If we change this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes affecting AI data sharing, we will present a renewed in-app consent prompt before the change takes effect. You are advised to review this page periodically for any changes.
